Solar inverters 101

When you think of solar power, usually all you will consider is the solar panels. And that’s fair, after all, without them, there would be no power at all. However, the solar inverter is also an incredibly important and powerful piece of the solar power installation. So what is it, and what does it do? Well, here at the Eco Renewables Group, we are Preston’s leading solar power experts. As a result, we have produced this guide to solar inverters.

What do solar inverters do?

So what’s so special about solar inverters? What exactly do they do? Well, without a solar inverter there would be no power output generated from your solar panels. That’s because solar power in its raw form is direct current. This isn’t compatible at all with our circuitry systems. Instead, we rely heavily on alternating current. So a solar inverter has the task of inverting the power produced by the solar panels into safe and usable alternating current. Without it, the solar panels would be completely useless.

Types of solar inverter

Solar inverters are crucial to your solar power system, and they are available in different types. So, what are the options available?

  • The stand alone inverter- this attaches to the solar panel batteries and converts the electricity from there into AC ready to be used throughout your home. This type of inverter is not connected to the national grid, so you wont be able to sell your excess electricity back to the national grid.
  • The grid tie inverter- this is connected to the solar panels themselves creating AC current directly. It also feeds into the national grid, which means that with one of these inverters you can make money by selling your electricity back to the national grid. This is the most common type of inverter.
